Make Your Own Electrolyte Recovery Drink

Ever feel lightheaded, weak or lethargic after a long sweaty workout? If so, your electrolyte levels may have dipped too low.

Electrolytes are essential nutrients such as sodium, potassium and magnesium that help regulate nerve and muscle function, fluid balance, and blood pressure. An electrolyte imbalance can occur when excessive bodily fluids are lost through prolonged sweating, vomiting, diarrhea or a high fever.

After an intense sweat session, consuming foods and/or beverages containing electrolytes is key to making a quick and full recovery. For example, eating soup and a banana along with sufficient water can replenish sodium and potassium stores.

An electrolyte drink can be helpful, too. But think twice before downing a commercial sports beverage filled with refined sugar and artificial food dyes - not exactly healthy! Instead, try making your own with this refreshing all-natural recipe:

Makes 2 servings

2 cups water
Juice of 2 lemons (about ¼ cup)
¼ tsp salt
2 T honey

Shake or whisk all ingredients together. Store in fridge until ready to enjoy!
