Exercise more. Eat better. Lose weight. Most New Year’s resolutions are filled with good intentions. But how many do we actually keep?
Statistics show that only 46 percent of people maintain their resolution over six months. And yet, year after year, we continue to set vague, unattainable goals that ultimately get abandoned.
Goals are good, so don’t give up! Instead, make S.M.A.R.T. resolutions that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-Bound.
For example, instead of “exercise more,” set a specific weekly goal such as doing three hours of aerobic activity (of any intensity or type) or running 10-15 miles.
Want to eat better? Aim to consume one vegetarian meal daily or leafy greens five to seven times a week. Be sure to leave room for flexibility!
Determined to drink more water? Resolve to down one large (10-ounce) glass as soon as you wake up every morning.
Losing weight is a very worthy endeavor. But beware of focusing too much on the scale. You’re better off working on creating healthy habits. Set nutrition and fitness goals, and weight loss should follow.
This year, be S.M.A.R.T. and set yourself up for success with resolutions that you can achieve!
